WATER RESISTANCY TESTS

All water resistant watches manufactured in Switzerland have to go through various pressure tests such as high air pressure, high water pressure, heat and mechanical tension tests and finally get their “water resistant” degree.

Few hints on the water resistance terms:

  • 3 ATM or 3 BAR (30 meters or 100 feet)

Good for daily activities, rain, water splash or hand washing. Not good for swimming.

  • 5 ATM or 5 BAR (50 meters or 165 feet)

Good for all daily activities, swimming and showering. Not good for diving or water sports.

  • 10 ATM or 10 BAR (100 meters or 330 feet)

Good for all daily activities and swimming in a pool. Not good for diving board jumps, high pressure and water sports.

  • 20 ATM or 20 BAR (200 meters or 660 feet)

The lowest degree of resistance for diving board jumps, high pressure and water sports. The only types of chronographs which are resistant to such conditions are “Diver” types

Important: The above criteria are valid only for metal cases of chronographs and not for leather straps. Water can damage leather straps.
